Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that gently shaves off the top layers of skin using a special instrument to reveal newer, undamaged skin. The treatment can also remove peach fuzz or unwanted hair on your face, although this is only temporary as the hair will grow back. Dermaplaning is different from dermabrasion and microdermabrasion, which are other skin resurfacing procedures that use different tools and take off different amounts of skin. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure, while microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure that uses an exfoliating blade to sand away your skin to remove scars.

However, people with preexisting skin concerns such as active acne, cold sore outbreaks, eczema, moles, freckles, skin tags or other skin growths, psoriasis, skin burns, or skin rashes should avoid it.

Before the procedure, a healthcare provider examines your skin to make sure it’s healthy enough for the procedure, discusses your goals, and reviews your health history. The procedure itself does not require general anesthesia, and a numbing cream or spray is usually applied to the face about half an hour before. The healthcare provider uses a special instrument called a dermatome to shave off hair and skin cells gently. Afterwards, they may apply a soothing gel or ointment to reduce redness, swelling, or irritation.

Recovery after dermaplaning varies from person to person, and the length of the procedure depends on the size of the area that needs treatment. After the procedure, your skin may be red, swollen, and slightly tender. You may also notice enlarged pores or small whiteheads on your skin, which usually go away with the swelling. A scab may form over the treated area after two weeks, which falls off to reveal tight and pink skin. You should avoid strenuous activities and stay out of the sun for four to six weeks. The treated area may take up to 12 months to return to your normal skin color.

Dermaplaning is generally considered safe but carries risks such as infection, scarring, and skin discoloration. It is also important to note that the benefits of dermaplaning are temporary, and multiple procedures may be required for long-lasting results.
